Northside Wrestling

Wrestling has the distinction of being the oldest sport known to man. The sport teaches the value of hard work and also teaches self-defense.  Wrestling is unlike other sports because you are matched up against opponents who are the same weight as you.  It is a sport that requires strength, agility, and endurance all at the same time. Although a regulation match is only six minutes, those who have wrestled know that it can be a grueling six minutes. Wrestlers who complete a season know that they have done something few can say they have done.

Coach Redmond is the head wrestling coach for Northside High School and has been coaching wrestling since 2008.  He wrestled six years competitively beginning in 8th grade and also studied martial arts while at the US Military Academy at West Point, NY.  Coach Redmond’s desire is for his student-athletes to learn the value of teamwork, grow in the fundamentals of wrestling, and develop mental toughness.  What makes him proud to be coach is when his wrestlers put in their best effort and wrestle a full match using the techniques they have been taught in practice. Coach Redmond’s “big picture” goal is to make his wrestlers into good husbands and fathers.

Our coaching staff also includes Joaquin Maldonado, who was a nationally ranked wrestler at UCLA and was a member of the Mexican national freestyle team for six years. As a member of the Mexican team, Coach Maldonado traveled extensively internationally, competing against opponents from around the world and receiving coaching from some of the best in the sport. After finishing his competitive career, he served in the Army for over 25 years.  Today, he works to help student-athletes achieve their potential both on and off the mat. Coach Maldonado always looks for opportunities to teach his wrestlers about life, leadership, and achieving goals.

So, if you want to be a part of a team that works hard to be as tough as possible, join the Northside wrestling team today.
